The Fast Shadow of Light
New Prints from Steven Norton and Angela Rosensweig
Please join us in celebrating what has evolved into our culminating project this summer - a spontaneous exhibition of new print work that captures the initial intent of our pop up project - inviting artists we love to come and consider the print medium, not only as an end in itself but as a means to reconsider the medium of choice.
Both Angela and Steven pulled prints at our kick off party earlier this Spring and their blocks have remained on our work bench, acting as calling cards for their final vision and as objects of contemplation in and of themselves.
Angela, a painter whose canvases abstract the seemingly banal street views captured with her iPhone, has created prints which point to the late paintings of Fairfield Porter.
Steven a printmaker by training who honed his lithography skills at Tamrarind in the early 1970s, still loves the look and feel of paper but has focused on watercolors for the last 30 years. His works which feature activated birds and other animals harken back to the height of the Arts and Crafts periods and the monumental children's book illustrations of the time.
Both create work which whether printed in black and white, or with color suggest a light emanating from within, as if looking at stained glass windows.
Opening reception: July 30, 2015

The Sacred And The Profane
Latest Others from Tony Toscani and Olga Sophie Kauppinen
Sociologist Emile Durkheim argued that the function of religion was to separate the sacred from the profane. For Durkheim the profane is synonymous with the mundane, base, day-to-day concerns of the individual. Sacred are those things valued (good or evil) by a community as a whole and subsequently elevated or separated out as totem or taboo.
These artists, shown together, blur this dichotomy –
One body of work provides an intimate look at death, grief, and spirituality, but also looks to find the poetry in scenes from daily life.
The other directs our gaze toward the base experiences of the mundane – lust, anger, paranoia – but provides this view in such a way such as to suggest a connection or communion with subject, creating the spiritual from the profane.

Residency III: Addicted to Method
With Joanna Mulder and Drew Maillard
June 19, 2015 - July 2, 2015
Gesamtkunst Werkshop is pleased to announce the culmination of its third residency with a reception for Joanna Mulder and Drew Maillard. Addicted to Method marks the culmination of their collaborative efforts on press as well as current work from their own practices.
Veterans of the underground pop scene, Drew and Joanna work in very deliberate graphic styles, with approaches to mark making that translate fluidly into the very precise methodology and and aesthetics of printmaking.
In true DIY punk style, Drew and Joanna will be bringing unconventional methods to the print medium, challenging specifically the traditions of relief and intaglio printmaking
Joanna’s starts with the application of pyrography for both intaglio and relief. Drew explores the concept of an exploded print, each layer utilizing a different printmaking process.
